Roles and Responsibility
watch?v=lFHk6sw1gzI is a link to a fitting video. In the Roles and Responsibility unit we took tow poems that had a similar meaning. One of these titled “Paper Matches” a young girl narrates it and is noticing that roles of males and female are different. She doesn’t like it and feels that she is being used, just like a paper match. The other poem “St. George” was similar in meaning. In myth St. George was supposed to have slain a mighty dragon making himself a hero. In this story a girl and a dragon are best friends, but a brave knight comes along one day and kills the dragon. The girl is sad at this and despises the knight for it going against traditional roles. We also read the story, “Everyone Talks Loudly In Chinatown” about a young Chinese girl who was stuck in a world of tradition, but longed to live a modern life. Against her parents will she started dating a white boy. All these stories dealt with people going against traditional values and moving into more modern ideas, which was kind of annoying seeing as all the issues seemed petty, to me anyway. This unit was alright, but defiantly my least favorite of them all. Here is a link to a relate arcticle. This is a comment.
